Cancelling/lowering commercial or residential property taxes for a period of time or in a designated geographic area is not permissible under the Municipal Act. This Act governs all municipalities in Ontario.
Here is the section of Municipal Act that speaks to this.
For example: Provide a refund or reduction in Property taxes for commercial properties for the period of time when they were not able to operate.
Section 106 (2)(d) of the Municipal Act, “the Municipality shall not grant assistance by giving a total or partial exemption from any levy, charge or fee” For any manufacturing business, commercial or industrial enterprise.
Section 307 (1) “Taxes to be levied equally” - the provision of the Act provides that the Municipality must levy taxes on the assessment as a whole and cannot differentiate between different classes of property
Town Council and Staff are working diligently to identify ways to reduce the financial burden being felt by residents and businesses in Huntsville
